Exercise and its Benefits for Mental Health on College Students 

Mental Health on college students is a very important concept that until recently, has not gotten enough attention.  High amounts of stress impact your body, thoughts, feelings, and behavior.  College students, as everyone knows, have loads of stress to deal with whether it be social, work, or school related.  It is important to know exactly how stress impacts the body and what changes can be made to decrease the amount.         

College stressors can include: 

  • Adjusting to college life

  • Managing interpersonal relationships

  • Academic pressure

  • Changes in lifestyle

  • Housing arrangements

  • Women are more likely than men to seek help with mental health problems

  • Most people don't seek help because they think it is a sign of weakness

  • 53% of college students reported being depressed since starting college

  • 9% contemplated suicide    (Suicide prevention link)

  • 76% reported being overwhelmed

  • 22% felt unable to function
